Pennypit Special Needs Youth Club
Newsletter Spring 2007
Derek Cunningham, Rachel Rattray and Kathleen Inglis were each presented with a Millennium Volunteer Award at the recent Awards Ceremony held in the Brunton Hall by Volunteer Development East Lothian. The awards were presented to each of them by local MSP Ian Gray in recognition of over 200 hours voluntary service provided by them to the Pennypit Special Needs Youth Club. The staff and the Management Committee of the Youth Club would like to congratulate Derek, Rachel and Kathleen in their achievement, and thank them for the tremendous support that they have provided the Youth Club with over the years. The Youth Club is now on summer holidays until August, but if you are interested in volunteering with the Youth Club, please contact Jackie Munro, the Youth Club Manager on 07904964501.
Club News
Well, there has been a lot going on in the Youth Club recently, and I am sure by now you will all be aware that Beverley has taken a year out to enjoy her pregnancy and have her baby, which is due in October. We would all like to wish Beverley and her husband Stewart well with their forthcoming addition to the family. We would also like to thank Stewart for all his help with developing of the web site. We now have John maintaining the website on behalf of the Club, to whom we are grateful to for stepping in at such short notice.
The Youth Club’s annual AGM will be held on Monday 7th May 2007 at 7pm at the Pennypit Centre. Refreshments will be provided on the night.
We have decided to run it on a Club night, and therefore there will be no youth club on Monday 7th May.
We would appreciate it if as many of you as possible could come to the AGM and show your support to the Club. Unfortunately last year only one parent turned up, which was extremely disappointing for us, and obviously did not look good to the different organisations that help us out with funding! This invitation is also for the young people who attend the Youth Club, who we would be absolutely delighted to have attend the AGM.
Could everyone please confirm attendance to the AGM (for catering reason), to Jackie by Thursday 3rd May 2007.

Walking Group
We now have an established walking group which is led by Steve Nelson, which is proving to be very successful. The walking group runs throughout the year, and Steve will let us know shortly what the dates are for the summer.
Residential Weekend
The Club recently enjoyed a weekend in February at Innerwick Residential Centre, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. We are therefore looking to run another residential at Innerwick for a week in the summer from Monday 9th July – Sunday 15th July. We are aware that a lot of people may not be interested in coming for the whole week, so if you would like to discuss alternatives with Jackie please do.
West Highland Way
Steve Nelson is just now putting together plans to walk the West Highland Way over several weekends with some of the young people. We are at present applying for funding for this from various sources as this is obviously a very expensive trip, but for many of our young people will be a once in a lifetime opportunity. In order to try and enhance our fundraising for the West Highland Way we are having a “Family Night” on Wednesday 20th June 2007 at the Pennypit. There will be a disco, the bar will be open, and you can bring along your own food for the buffet! The cost per family is £5. We will also have a tombola available on the night. Please contact the Youth Club if you wish tickets for this event.
Contact Numbers for the Club
If you wish to contact the Club on the night that your young person is at the Club, please call the Pennypit on 01875 819635. If you have any general enquiries, or need to discuss any aspect of the Youth Club, please contact, Jackie Munro on 07904964501 or email us at admin@psnyc.co.uk.
The Club is a registered charity, and East Lothian Council fund the rental of the building and salaries for the Club staff. The Club though has to find money through fundraising for the various activities that we run; equipment; training expenses of staff and volunteers etc. We are therefore eternally grateful to all parents for any help or input they can provide. If anyone has any such ideas, please contact Jackie.
