Activities

Youth Club

The Pennypit Special Needs Youth Club is based in the Pennypit Centre, Rope Walk, Prestonpans, and operates 2 youth club sessions per week. One on a Monday night for 18 youths, and one on a Thursday night for 18 youths, from 7-9pm on each evening. The Youth Club operates during term time only, and this runs alongside East Lothian Council’s School term Calendar. In total, the Youth Club caters for 36 youths with additional support needs who attend the Club each week, whilst also offering work experience placements for a further 4 youths with additional support needs through volunteering opportunities.

The Youth Club offers a wide variety of workshops to its members, some activities over the past year have been:

Swimming

Drumming workshops

Drama workshops in partnership with ELC Arts Department

Dance workshops

Archery

Rock Climbing

Canoeing/Kayaking

The Youth Club has also held 2 residentials over the past year, one to Lochgoilhead to the Scouts Centre, and the other to Edinburgh Council’s Outdoor Education Centre in Lagganlea in Aviemore. Whilst on residential, the youths partook in a variety of outdoor pursuits, namely canoeing, kayaking, bell boating, climbing Jacobs ladder, abseiling amongst many more. All the youths that partook in the residentials had a fantastic time, and enjoyed all the activities immensely.

We were also very fortunate to work alongside Caroline Davis, Community Development Officer within East Lothian Council this year in participating in our first European Funded Youth Exchange to Ciriligano in Italy. Five youths partook in this fabulous opportunity alongside youths with additional support needs from Ireland, Lithuania, France and Italy. The Exchange itself was named "Touch and Smell", and activities throughout the week included – bee keeping, honey making, visit to a vine yard, pasta making, swimming, horse riding, cycling, archery, tree top walking, and a visit to Matera amongst other things. The feedback from the youths was that this was a "phenomenal" exchange, and one which the youths would like to see more of.

Girls on the Move

Girls on the Move is a group that runs on a Saturday morning from 10am – 12noon, and is for young girls with additional support needs aged 15-24 who reside in East Lothian. The group is once again primarily based in the Pennypit Centre, Rope Walk, Prestonpans, but is out and about on a regular basis participating in a variety of activities within the East Lothian Community.

As with the Youth Club, Girls on the Move, operates term time only in conjunction with East Lothian Council’s School term times.

The main aim of the girls group is to provide a fun and safe environment for young girls to participate in a healthy lifestyle. Activities for this group have included:

Rock Climbing

Bowling

Canoeing/Kayaking

Swimming

White Water Rafting

Blo Karting

Raft Building

Dance Workshops

Orienteering

Archery

Skiing

The girls themselves assist in putting the programme together, and actively evaluate all activities that they participate in.

Currently the group runs with 2 youth workers and 12 girls. Unfortunately, due to funding we are not in a position to provide 1:1 support to any of the girls,

and therefore ask that if anyone requires 1:1 support that they put this in place themselves.

Pitstop Cafe

The Pitstop Cafe opened in April 2009, and provides work based training opportunities to 4 youths with additional support needs who reside in East Lothian.

The Cafe is primarily funded through East Lothian Council, Tyne & Esk Leader and also Coalfields Regeneration Trust, and has funding until December 2010.

The main aim of the Cafe is to provide work based training opportunities in a catering environment for young people with additional support needs who reside

in East Lothian. The final result of the training programme is that these young people will actively seek employment at the end of their training.

Each trainee will have a tailored training package based on their individual needs, and trainee positions will range from 1-2 years depending on the pace at

which the individual progresses through the training.

The Pitstop Cafe will work in partnership with Jewel & Esk College to provide SVQ1 training to the young people whilst attending the facility.

The Cafe will support a healthy living lifestyle, having recently been awarded the "Healthy Living Award".

The Pitstop Cafe train youths in the art of coffee making through our business alliance with "Starbucks". Youths are trained using a Starbucks training package,

and are also offered a one day a week work experience placement through Starbucks, in one of their Edinburgh stores during their training with the Pitstop.

Funders

The Pennypit Special Needs Youth Club would like to thank everyone who has assisted us with funding over the last year, namely:

East Lothian Council

Tyne & Esk Leader

Coalfields Regeneration Trust

Without funding from these organisations, the Pennypit Special Needs Youth Club would be unable to carry out the valuable service

that it does to the community of East Lothian.
